Tehuacana Hills

This area north of Mexia, the highest point between Houston and Dallas (altitude 661 feet), has been a focal point of history for nearly 200 years. In 1797, Philip Nolan's trading expedition found the peaceful Tehuacana people farming here. Cherokees destroyed the farming tribe around 1830. Tehuacana Academy, organized in 1852, provided the incentive for founding of Trinity University, now in San Antonio. The silvery-towered former administration building dominates the area. Westminster Street at College Avenue in Tehuacana.
