Sul Ross State University Museum Of The Big Bend

For more than 70 years, this museum has been collecting and exhibiting artifacts of the Big Bend region. Here, people have traveled and lived for more than 11,000 years. Throughout that time, four distinct cultures emerged and shaped the history and heritage of the region. The exhibits capture this history and the contributions of the Native Americans, Spanish, Mexicans and Anglo-Americans. The museum is accessible to the disabled. Gift shop. Featured Attraction

After three previous structures were destroyed by fire, construction on the present courthouse began in 1884, and the building was dedicated in 1886. The Victorian building—designed by Waco architect Wesley Clarke Dobson, who designed nine other Texas courthouses—is constructed of limestone quarried locally at a cost of $55,555.55. The seal inside marks the exact center of the county. Junction of U.S. 80/180 and Texas 171/51.
