Located on Washington Square in the heart of the city, this is the oldest
university building in the state and one of the three oldest school buildings in
Texas. The Greek Revival building was opened in 1859 to house a university
chartered by the Republic. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to education in
Texas during the 19th century with items from a Confederate Hospital—one was
housed in the building during the Civil War. Open 1–4 p.m. Tue.–Fri. and 10
a.m.–4 p.m. Sat. Mound and Hughes streets. 936/569-7292.
