Museum Of The Llano Estacado

This museum bears the traditional Spanish name for the Texas High Plains. It maintains 80 exhibits that chronologically describe the geological, prehistoric, cultural and economic development in the geographical area of the Llano Estacado. Housed in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Regional Heritage Center, on Eighth Street behind Wayland Baptist University's campus. Open April–Nov. 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri. and 1–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun. 1900 W. Eighth St. 806/291-3660.

Featured Attraction

Snow and blue geese winter in this 27,000-acre refuge between Cedar Lake Creek and the San Bernard River on the Intracoastal Waterway. Herons and ibis are found on marsh ponds; shorebirds, gulls, terns are on mud flats; and mottled ducks nest in the area. Bird list for the refuge contains nearly 250 species. Auto-tours, hiking trails and boardwalks are great for spotting migrating warblers, cinnamon teals, purple gallinules and western rarities. Open sunrise–sunset daily. Free.
