This site boasts the largest tract of native habitat in the World Birding
Center network. Etched by ancient curves of the Rio Grande, its 1,700
semi-tropical acres provide a quiet birding retreat. Colorful Neotropical and
Nearctic migrants—like the summer tanager, American redstart and yellow-breasted
chat—have been seen. When resaca levels are controlled to benefit wildlife,
species like the least grebe, black-bellied whistling duck, purple gallinule and
various herons, as well as migrating waterfowl, should congregate here. Open 8
a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat. Park offices may be closed during certain days of non-peak
season—contact the park for information. Admission charge. 1000 New Carmen Road,
four miles west of Brownsville on U.S. 281. 956/565-3919. www.worldbirdingcenter.org/sites/brownsville/index.phtml.
