Lake Houston Wilderness Park

The 4,919.5 acre-park is situated at the confluence of Caney Creek and the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. The park includes lodges, campsites, trails for nature study, and an equestrian area, as well as swimming, bird watching, hiking, biking and horseback riding. (The park does not furnish horses.) A branch of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, this 28-room Latin Colonial structure was home to the late Ima Hogg, daughter of James Stephen Hogg, first native-born governor of Texas. The collection consists of more than 4,800 works from the colonial period to the early 19th century, including furniture, paintings, metals, ceramics, glass and textiles. The gardens consist of 14 acres bounded on three sides by Buffalo Bayou. The Lora Jean Kilroy Visitors and Education Center, a contemporary 18,000-square-foot building, opened in late September 2010 with a library, retail shop, meeting space and public terraces—all dedicated to American art, culture and history. Gardens are open 1–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., other times by appointment. Admission charge. 1 Westcott St. 713/520-2600. www.mfah.org.
