Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens

This 1830s home was occupied by several great Texas pioneers, including Joseph Durst, founder of the Texas town of Angelina and alcalde (mayor) of Nacogdoches; Issac W. Burton, veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto; Bennet Blake, delegate to the 1875 Constitutional Convention; and Thomas J. Rusk, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and one of Texas' first two U.S. Senators. This wonderful wood-framed house is interpreted to the 1840s–60s when the Blackburn family lived there. The house is the second-oldest structure still standing on its original site. The grounds of this historic landmark include a blacksmith shop, smokehouse and historic gardens. Open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tue.–Sat. Allow 45 minutes for tours. Donations welcome. 304 North St. 936/560-4443.
