Ann Richards Congress Ave bridge and the sunset bat flight
Photographer: J. Griffis Smith

Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge

This bridge is home to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats—one of the largest urban bat colonies in the nation. From March to October they create a spectacle at sunset with a mass exodus from underneath the bridge for nocturnal flight. Kiosks on the north and south shore of Lady Bird Lake's hike-and-bike trail, by the bridge, inform visitors about the nocturnal mammals. At Barton Springs Road and Congress Avenue. Bat Conservation International: 512/327-9721. www.batcon.org.
