Southern Pacific steam engine No. 786, the centerpiece of the Austin Steam Train Association's historic excursion operations, is being rebuilt. In the meantime, the excursion schedule runs uninterrupted with diesel locomotives –– the Hill Country Flyer and the Bertram Flyer.
The Hill Country Flyer departs Cedar Park at 10 a.m. Saturdays for a two-hour, round-trip ride to Burnet. During the layover, guests can dine on their own picnic lunch at a nearby park or at a nearby restaurant. Also, the Hill Country Gunfighters provide a wild west shoot 'em up show using historic firearms.
The Bertram Flyer departs Cedar Park at 2 p.m. Sundays for a three-hour round-trip excursion to Bertam. The trip includes a short stop to explore the historic 1912 depot before returning to Cedar Park. 512/477-8468. austinsteamtrain.org.
