University of Texas Marine Science Institute

Research facility with visitor center includes aquaria with Gulf marine life and plants. Educational movies are shown at 3 p.m. Mon.–Thu. Hosts several Elderhostel groups throughout the year. Center also has exhibits, poster displays and a gift shop. Along the ship channel between the Mustang and San Jose Islands. Open weekdays 8 a.m.–noon, 1–5 p.m. Explore the Wetlands Education Center (free) featuring marsh/sea-grass ponds and boardwalks for teaching students and visitors. 361/749-6806. www.utmsi.utexas.edu.
