The Amon Carter features Western and American art. The 109,000-square foot building has three times the exhibition space as before, allowing four times the amount of artwork to be on view. First opened to house Amon G. Carter Sr.'s collection of 400 paintings, drawings and works of sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The museum has gradually expanded to include works from a vast array of artists, from Frederic Edwin Church to Georgia O'Keeffe. The American photography collection, one of the largest in the country, was started in 1961 with Dorthea Lange's portrait of Charles M. Russell and now includes works by Matthew Brady, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand, among others. In the Cultural District. Open Tue., Wed., Fri. 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Thu. 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sun. noon–5 p.m.; drop-in tours at 2 p.m. No admission fee. 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd. 817/738-1933. www.cartermuseum.org.
