In 1863, Union soldiers attempted to invade Texas at Sabine Pass, a primary port for Confederate shipments of supplies and vital to the war effort. In a battle lasting less than an hour, Lt. Richard "Dick" Dowling and his 46 men manned the fort's six cannons, defeating the Union ships and halting the invasion. Area ports escaped destruction, and Union forces never penetrated the Texas interior. Today, the 58-acre Sabine Pass Battleground honors the small band of heroic soldiers with a bronze statue of Dowling and an interpretive pavilion illustrating the story of the battle. Texas Historical Commission property. Open daily, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. 12 miles south of Port Arthur on F.M. 3322 (Dick Dowling Road) off Texas 87. www.visitspb.com.
