Region: Piney Woods
Founded in 1854 as a trade center at the intersection of two main roads.
First known as Crossroads. Now, it is situated between two major highways (I-20
and I-30) and is known as the Art Capital of East Texas. Name changed to honor
early settler, John E. Wynn. Spelling was supposedly changed by a newspaper
editor in the 1870s because of a shortage of the letter "y" in his type. It is
the center of a scenic area popular with photographers. Recreational
opportunities are available on nearby lakes.
One of Texas' best known salutes to fall foliage is Winnsboro's Autumn
Trails, held every weekend in October. Other annual events include Hog Rally and
the Cruise-In in October. 903/342-0684, 903/342-7788.
