Seat of Collingsworth County, the town was named for the Duke of Wellington by one of the English owners of the Rocking Chair Ranch. The ranch was known by Texas cowboys as "Nobility Ranche" because of ownership by British noblemen, including the Baron of Tweedmouth (Sir Dudley Coutts Majoribanks) and the Earl of Aberdeen (John Campbell Hamilton Gordon).
