First settled in 1853, and in 1855–56 was known as Encina. Once domain of
notorious frontier sheriff and outlaw, J. King Fisher. A historical marker is on
the graves of Fisher and early settlers in Pioneer Cemetery at the 500 block of
N. Park Street. Today, a retail center for extensive cattle, sheep and goat
ranching and truck farming. Industries include vegetable packing and processing,
aircraft modifications and garment making. Uvalde, the county seat, is at
intersection of U.S. 90 and U.S. 83. Home of Southwest Texas Junior College and
Sul Ross State University, Rio Grande College.
