Region: Prairies and Lakes
Named after the historic Peters' Colony settlement, some portions of the land
for the city were purchased from descendants of the county's first settlers, who
came here in the 1840s. Today, this growing city sits on the eastern shore of
Lake Lewisville, just 35 minutes from downtown Dallas and 25 minutes from the
DFW Airport.
The Colony is home to several golf courses. The Tribute golf course and The
Old American Golf Club course were named among Golf Magazine's top five
courses in Texas in 2010. Stewart Peninsula Golf Course also offers challenging
play with great views of the lake.
Hidden Cove Park, a 720-acre facility on Lake Lewisville, offers a marina, RV
and camping sites, boating, swimming, water skiing and fishing. www.marinequest.net/hiddencovepark.
Annual events include the Bow-Wow Powwow festival for dogs and owners in
September and Pirate Days in October.
