Region: Hill Country
Known historically as the Stockman's Paradise, settlement began in the late
1800s when sheep and goat ranchers sought the rich "boot-high" grasslands that
once defined the area. Ranching continues to be a common way of life, however
the wool and mohair industry has declined and many Angora goats have been
replaced with Boer or meat goats, though foundation bloodlines still exist in
Sutton County.
Today, reflects both the Texas Hill Country and Chihuahuan Desert in
topography and wildlife. Hunting is a major industry and wild turkey,
white-tailed deer and axis deer are common in this quaint West Texas town.
Sonora offers visitors a true taste of West Texas, and impressive
turn-of-the-century architecture can be enjoyed while shopping or
dining.
