This San Patricio County seat was established in 1885 as a station on the San
Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad. The greatest population surge came in 1909
when several large ranches divided into smaller farms, creating a diversity of
agriculture that is still apparent. Includes a small downtown park with picnic
area and 300-acre Rob and Bessie Welder Park with playground, golf, swimming
pool and small lake. East of U.S. 181 north.
