It was established in 1894 by John Henry Kirby as a sawmill town with deep ties to railroad industries. Today, the principal commercial center in Hardin County is located at the edge of the Piney Woods region, about 15 miles northeast of the Port of Beaumont.

Annual events include the Dulcimer Festival, Crusin' Silsbee and Christmas in the Big Thicket Festival.
