Region: Panhandle Plains
Founded in 1917 as the terminus of a Santa Fe Railroad spur from Lubbock. The
town was named for a railroad executive. It soon became a major cattle shipping
point. Today, it is a center for area ranches.
Attractive Gaines County Park with picnicking, playground, golf, is seven
miles south on U.S. 62/385. Quanah Parker birthplace (See GROESBECK) is 20 miles east at Cedar
Lake; marker at site.
