Region: Prairies and Lakes
This community was founded in 1846 by the families of Daniel and Moritz
Lehman, who arrived from Prussia and settled on the banks of Walnut Creek. Other
German families settled in the area a decade later. In 1931, local children
renamed the community, which was then called Hilbigville, in honor of Knute
Rockne, the famous Notre Dame University football coach who died in a plane
crash that year.
