Port Isabel

Port Isabel
Photographer: Stan A. Williams

Region: Gulf Coast

This small, picturesque village is on the Laguna Madre, the body of water between the Texas mainland and Padre Island. Seaside atmosphere has accommodations, RV parks, restaurants and shopping. The area was a supply base for Gen. Zachary Taylor's army in Brownsville during the Mexican War, 1846–48. In 1848–49, the port saw a flow of gold seekers from the East, landing there to begin the overland trek to California.

In the Port Isabel area, anglers can fish from beach, piers and jetties. Group boats provide bay and deep-sea fishing for half and full days; charter cruisers are available for offshore sport. Small boats with guides available for bay fishing. Marinas and boat rentals are available.

Nearby Cities: Rio Hondo, Los Fresnos, San Benito, Raymondville, Port Mansfield, South Padre Island, more...
