Region: Gulf Coast
This small, picturesque village is on the Laguna Madre, the body of water
between the Texas mainland and Padre Island. Seaside atmosphere has
accommodations, RV parks, restaurants and shopping. The area was a supply base
for Gen. Zachary Taylor's army in Brownsville during the Mexican War, 1846–48.
In 1848–49, the port saw a flow of gold seekers from the East, landing there to
begin the overland trek to California.
In the Port Isabel area, anglers can fish from beach, piers and jetties.
Group boats provide bay and deep-sea fishing for half and full days; charter
cruisers are available for offshore sport. Small boats with guides available for
bay fishing. Marinas and boat rentals are available.
