
Region: Gulf Coast
The name is Spanish for "Land of Flowers"—chosen for the blooming meadows
along Vince's Bayou. The bayou figured prominently in the Battle of San Jacinto.
It is now a residential community closely tied to the petrochemical and shipping
industries along the Houston Ship Channel. Town became a rural post office in
1900, mushroomed into a bustling residential suburb and continued to grow with
Houston. It is the home of San Jacinto Junior College and Texas Chiropractic
College. Northeast is the site of the capture of Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa
Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto.
