Settlement in the area began as early as 1822. The city was established in
1859 when the Houston & Texas Central Railroad was built through and the
town was laid out. Other railroads followed, and the city became a regional
cotton processing and shipping center. The downtown area is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places and features ornate 19th-century
architecture, antebellum and Victorian-style homes, beautiful parks and nearby
museums. Along oak-lined streets, visitors will find handmade treasures,
antiques and homestyle cooking.
