The discovery of medicinal qualities in local waters made the city nationally
famous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was said that waters of the
Crazy Well (discovered in 1885) could cure mental illness and a long list of
other maladies. Canoe the Brazos, shop the antique stores downtown or the VF
Outlet Mall (Open daily at 4500 U.S. 180), or ask for information about hunting
leases or area fishing.
Bicycle enthusiasts take to Palo Pinto County for races and rallies through
the Palo Pinto Mountain Range with the ultimate challenge, Cherry Pie Hill,
being a highlight of the ride. Routes of 22, 37, 60 and 100 miles are mapped out
