Region: Big Bend Country
Before 1925, only a lone boxcar occasionally stood on a side track at this
featureless site. Then an oil driller named McCamey hit a gusher. In less than a
year, it was a brawling boom town of 10,000, housed in tents and hastily
constructed buildings. Much quieter today, McCamey is still a center of oil
activity and is a livestock shipping point for surrounding ranches. In addition,
a growing number of wind turbine generators on the surrounding mesas make
McCamey the wind energy capital of Texas. On U.S. 67 and part of U.S. 385 La
Entrada Al Pacifico Trade Corridor, McCamey is midway between I-10 and I-20.
