Region: Prairies and Lakes
The first settlers at the present town site were John and Augustus King,
1844, who received land through the Peters' Colony, jointly owned by U.S. and
British businessmen. The colony was plagued by lawsuits and disputes, once
leading to a mob attack and burning of the land office. In 1855, the town got
its first mill, trading post, dry goods store and the first cotton gin in Denton
County. The Dallas and Wichita Railway arrived in 1881, and the city became a
significant trading post. Today's growth is stimulated by the expanding
Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and proximity to the DFW Airport.
The city hugs the south shore of Lewisville Lake, and a city park offers
fishing, boating, bird-watching, picnic areas, RV and tent camping, and other
recreational opportunities.
For the golfer, Lewisville has several challenging courses, including
replicas from 18 of the nation's toughest courses at Tour 18 and re-creations of
the best courses in Scotland at The Tribute.
