Region: Hill Country
Carrying the Spanish name for "lake view" this city was originally a lakeside
resort, incorporated in 1984. This community encompasses more than 15 miles of
shoreline on Lake Travis. It is the gateway to the Balcones Canyonlands National
Wildlife Refuge, and home to endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the
black-capped vireo. www.friendsofbalcones.org.
Abundant white-tailed deer roam along the lakeshore and golf courses. There
is year–round golfing, boating, fishing, hunting and tennis. Traveling west on
F.M. 1431 to Lago Vista offers exceptional Hill Country scenery, especially nice
in the spring when bluebonnets and wildflowers abound. The Wildlife Refuge hosts
the Balcones Songbird Festival in April and May and Refuge Week in October. The
Chamber of Commerce kicks off Hill Country Dayz Festival each fall in September
and October.
