Region: Panhandle Plains
At the center of Hale County, this town resulted from the compromise of two
rival villages, Hale City and Epworth, that united in 1893. Buildings from both
were moved to new town site. Originally supplying large ranches, the town became
center of intensive farming as irrigation developed in 20th century. In the
county, more than 400,000 irrigated acres produce cotton, grain sorghum, wheat,
sunflowers, sugar beets and table vegetables. Ten large outdoor murals that
historically depict life in Hale Center are displayed on buildings throughout
the city.
