Groesbeck was established in 1871 on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad
and named for one of its directors. The placement of the railroad here marked
the decline of the nearby community of Springfield, and Groesbeck replaced
Springfield as the seat of Limestone County in 1873. The town grew as a railroad
stop, trade center for area farms and ranches, and a source of oil, gas and coal
deposits.
Annual events include an arts-and-crafts show in March, the Limestone County
Fair in April and the Fiddle Festival in May.
