Region: Prairies and Lakes
This city, which grew from primitive salt works, was established in 1845 and
is now the site of one of largest salt plants in nation. The salt dome under the
city is about 1.5 miles across and about 16,000 feet thick; it could supply the
world's need for salt for 20,000 years.
A historical marker in the city details the life of Wiley Post, a famous
aviator who was born in Grand Saline.
