First named Chapin for a town site promoter, the town was renamed Edinburg in 1911. It is the Hidalgo County seat, western gateway to the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and a center of the vast vegetable and citrus culture. Industries include food processing, furniture, foundry products, fertilizers, oil and dairy. Home of University of Texas-Pan American.
