The town was established in 1872 as a railhead for the Missouri, Kansas and
Texas railroad, which was the first to enter the state from the north. Five
miles south of the Red River, the city is a gateway to Texas and popular Lake
Texoma. It is also noted as the birthplace of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

the chamber of commerce. Unique downtown district is an art mecca including
galleries and studios, as well as the Homestead Winery & Tasting Room,
numerous antique shops, eateries and bed-and-breakfasts.
