This community, established in 1848, experienced an early boom in 1894 when
city was drilling for water and struck oil instead. One of Texas' first
refineries was built here in 1897, and the city was the first in the state to
use natural gas for fuel and lighting, and crude oil for locomotive fuel.
The city is home to Navarro College and the Collin Street Bakery, 401 W. 7th
Ave., known worldwide for its "DeLuxe" Fruitcake, a favorite since 1896.
