Region: Prairies and Lakes
Named for the Comanche tribe, this community was established as a trade
center for surrounding ranches in 1858. Rich in pioneer and Texas history, there
are more than 65 historic landmarks in the county. Two Comanche County icons—the
"Fleming Oak" and "Old Cora"—sit on the southwest corner of town square.
Today, the town is the seat of Comanche County and is a center of
agricultural production, including grapes, peanuts, pecans, dairies, fruit,
cattle, livestock feeds and organics. Antique shops, restaurants, local artisans
and more can be found here. Camping, fishing, golf and water recreation are
available at Lake Proctor. The 42-acre City Park, Twin Creek Hiking Trail and
Community Center attract many visitors. Hunting is great for deer, quail, dove
and wild turkey.
Historic walking tour features courthouse square and historic business
district. A brochure and maps are available at the Comanche Chamber of Commerce
and Agriculture and at the visitor kiosk downtown.
