Columbus, the seat of Colorado County, was settled in 1823 by members of
Stephen F. Austin's original colony. The community bills itself as "The City of
Live Oaks" and is known for its Texian-era heritage, natural beauty and lovingly
restored historic buildings. A historical marker downtown identifies an old oak
under which the first court of the Third Judicial District of the Republic of
Texas convened in 1837.
The city is part of the Texas Independence Trail Region and also is on an
inland paddling trail designated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
This section of the Colorado River spans approximately six miles and takes
two–three hours to navigate by canoe. Information kiosks are at boat ramps/canoe
input under the North Bridge and at the take-out point in Beason's Park on Hwy.
