Settled about 1852 on the Bosque River, Clifton is the largest town in the
county, a marketing center for surrounding agricultural efforts and a gateway to
Lake Whitney. The city park offers picnic facilities, playground equipment and
RV sites. Fishing is available on the Bosque River and Lake Whitney. The Texas
Legislature designated the community the "Norwegian Capital of Texas" in 1997,
and Scandinavian traditions are still observed by descendants of Norse settlers.
Clifton is a Texas Main Street City. Three malls feature more than 100 antique
dealers in the downtown area.
