Region: Prairies and Lakes
This city, established about 1854 and first known as Camp Henderson, is the
seat of Johnson County and was once a stop on the Chisholm Trail. In 1867, the
community's name changed to honor Confederate Gen. Pat Cleburne. The city's
growth was tied to the railroad, and it once was the location of the state's
largest railroad construction and repair shop. Currently on display in Hulen
Park is the historic locomotive No. 3417, which is featured during Whistle Stop
Christmas. The historic downtown district offers local eateries and shopping in
dozens of antique and specialty stores.
Annual events include Springfest in April, Antique Alley and Yard Sale in
April and September, and Chisholm Trail celebration.
