Bridgeport's roots as the official Stagecoach Capital of Texas began in 1860
when a toll bridge was built over the West Fork of the Trinity River to
accommodate the Butterfield Overland Stage Company. In succeeding years,
Bridgeport's prosperity was built upon coal mines, brick plants, and oil and gas
drilling.
Bridgeport celebrates its roots with the Butterfield Stage Days festival and
PRCA rodeo the second weekend in May and with the Coal Miners Heritage Festival
in the fall.
