On Poesta Creek, the town was originally named Maryville for Mary Hefferman, the only survivor of a family killed in 1853. It became the seat of Bee County in 1860 and was renamed "Beeville-on-the-Poesta." It is home to Coastal Bend College, Chase Field Criminal Justice Complex and various manufacturing industries.
Hunters take deer, wild turkey, quail, dove, hogs and javelina in the area when in season. In the spring, bird watchers can spot a variety of species of birds at Veterans Memorial Park while enjoying wildflowers that cover the area.
