Region: South Texas Plains
Established in 1858 but preceded by much earlier Spanish, Mexican and
Anglo-American ranching activities, the town bills itself as the "Birthplace of
the Cowboy," epitomized by a bronze statue in front of city hall. Hunters seek
white-tailed deer (among largest in Texas) as well as dove and quail during
fall-winter hunting seasons.
