Seat of Jasper County, established in the late 1800s and named for Sgt.
William Jasper, a hero of the American Revolution. Area terrain—85 percent
forested by pines and hardwoods—ranges from hilly to level.
Jasper's historic town square features the courthouse built in 1889, three
bed-and-breakfasts, art galleries, outdoor art sculptures, antique shops,
murals, and the old county jail where county archives are housed. Sandy Creek
Park, downtown, features children's playground equipment, fishing ponds, walking
trail, picnic areas, basketball courts and a pavilion over the water.
Events include the Jasper Air Show and Rod Run Car Show in March, Dam to Dam
Bike Ride in April, Juneteenth Celebration in June, Festival of Trees in
November–December and Christmas Parade in December. It is home to one of the
nation's largest fishing tournaments—The Big Bass Splash.
