The town was established on the H&TC Railroad when the track was laid
from Brenham to Austin in 1871. Early settlers were mostly Wendish immigrants
who moved from the Serbin community six miles south. Notorious outlaw Bill
Longley was hanged here Oct. 11, 1878; there is a historical marker at his grave
in the cemetery on U.S. 290 at the west city limit. Find local information,
maps, and sign-ups for bus tours and museum tours at the chamber of
commerce.
