Region: Panhandle Plains
Established after the discovery of a rich Panhandle oil field in 1926. In
months, a boomtown of tents and shacks sprang up, and population numbered more
than 40,000. Orderly growth soon replaced the ribald oil-boom days, and now
Borger is a center for oil, chemicals and cattle. Tanks and towers of oil and
petrochemical plants dominate the skyline. Home of Frank Phillips College.
Annual events include Adobe Walls Trek in June and Juried Quilt Show in
July.
