Texas Music

Local Musicians

Most remote gig in Texas you have ever played?

I played in a barn once out near Bastrop in the woods. It took us forever to find it, and it didn't help that we rolled in at nightfall. It was great though – it was a friend's party with lots of live music, and we all just camped there that night, woke up and made breakfast tacos and left.

What’s your definition of Texas music?

Texas music is soulful and roots-oriented. Whether it's rock, pop, blues, jazz, folk or country music, it always has that raw feel to it. It also tends to have that swing or sway or swagger to it that I believe comes from the heat. A lot of Southern music has that element to it, but Texas is unique in that it's a bit west too, and on the border of Mexico, so it has a lot of different influences reflected in the music, art and culture. So you'll hear a rock band that has a Latin groove or a country band that has a jazz feel to it. Texas music is a blend of different sounds – it's hard to find a band here that strictly sticks to one style. That's what makes it so great!

Best place to see Texas music?

Continental Club in Austin.

Favorite Texas album?

Patty Griffin's 1000 Kisses. But a close second would be Lyle Lovett's first album, which my Dad would play over and over driving out to Big Bend when we were kids. It so reminds me of that long West Texas drive. And it's the perfect music for that drive.

Place you’d take someone who’s never been to Texas?

Garner State Park--it's heaven on earth! Big Bend would be a close second, though, especially since a lot of people don't know there are mountains in Texas!

Where in Texas feels most unlike Texas?

Um ... Austin?

Best four-day Texas vacation?

Ooh, that's hard, but I'd probably have to say camping at Garner State Park, tubing down the Frio, grilling, drinking wine out under the beautiful Texas sky.
