This community, established in 1848, experienced an early boom in 1894 when city was drilling for water and struck oil instead. One of Texas' first refineries was built here in 1897, and the city was the first in the state to use natural gas for fuel and lighting, and crude oil for locomotive fuel.
The Corsicana Visitor Center is the starting point of a walking tour of 27 downtown historic sites. Guide books are available. Visitor information is available outside the building after business hours.
The city is home to Navarro College and the Collin Street Bakery, known worldwide for its "DeLuxe" Fruitcake, a favorite since 1896. The Palace, a restored 1921 vaudeville theater on Sixth Avenue, hosts a variety of performing artists.
