In southern Hidalgo County, the town was incorporated in 1924 and named for Alamo Land and Sugar Co. Called the "Land of Two Summers," Alamo features an abundance of vegetables and citrus, and it is a winter resort/retirement area. It is one of the Rio Grande Valley's gateways to Mexico, via U.S. 281 to Nuevo Progreso.
