Established in 1848, the picturesque village is now a resort and retirement area north of San Marcos. It is characterized by cool, shady pools beneath towering cypress trees, frothy cascades on the Blanco River, sparkling Cypress Creek, green meadows, majestic hills and an abundance of white-tailed deer.
Recreational communities, bed-and-breakfasts, vacation resorts and youth camps dot the area. Climbing, hiking, swimming, golf, tennis, arts and crafts, and camping are popular activities. Many artists and authors make their homes here. Market Days, the second largest in Texas, are held the first Saturday of the month April–December. It includes arts and crafts and a flea market with more than 450 booths on display, sponsored by the Lions Club. At Lions Field on R.M. 2325.
