The Republic of Texas was born here on Oct. 3, 1836, with the swearing in of the republic's first congress and the inauguration of Sam Houston as the republic's first president and Stephen F. Austin as secretary of state. Today, the Replica of the First Capitol (at 14th and Hamilton) and other historic sites combine with antique and cottage shops, hotels and restaurants to make this a popular tourist destination. Tours of the Replica of the First Capitol and the Ammon Underwood Home, one of the oldest frame houses still standing in Texas, are available by appointment: 979/345-3921.
