The city became the county seat shortly after Gaines County was organized in 1905. It was named for nearby Native American watering places. This county is among the state's leaders in petroleum production, cotton and peanuts.
The Quanah Parker birthplace marker is 20 miles east at Cedar Lake, a large salt lake also known as Laguna Sabinas.
